By 4th grade, most students have a solid foundation in spelling—but for some, it’s still a major challenge. If you have students with dyslexia or students who struggle with spelling patterns and feel frustrated during traditional spelling lessons, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: spelling practice doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Game-based spelling activities can make a huge difference in building confidence and reinforcing tricky spelling rules.
Let’s talk about spelling games for 4th graders that actually work—especially for struggling spellers.
Why Struggling 4th Graders Need a Different Approach to Spelling
Spelling struggles don’t just come from a lack of practice. Many struggling 4th graders have gaps in phonics knowledge, difficulty recognizing spelling patterns, or challenges with working memory. If students don’t understand why words are spelled a certain way, memorization will only take them so far. That’s why using spelling activities that focus on patterns, word structure, and repeated exposure in a fun way is key.
Instead of just drilling word lists, try spelling games that encourage hands-on learning and provide plenty of practice with phonics rules. This approach helps students see connections between words and gain confidence in spelling independently.
Fun and Effective Spelling Games for 4th Graders
If you’re looking for spelling games for 4th graders that are engaging, effective, and require little to no prep, here are my top recommendations:
Spelling Game Boards
One of my go-to activities for struggling spellers is using spelling game boards. These printable phonics board games are designed to reinforce spelling patterns in a way that feels like play rather than work. Students roll a die, move their piece, and spell words using targeted rules, like vowel teams, suffixes, or tricky consonant blends. They get repeated exposure to the spelling rule without the pressure of a test.

Spelling Choice Boards
Struggling spellers can feel empowered by having more control over their learning. Choice boards allow students to pick spelling activities that interest them while still reinforcing spelling patterns. Whether it’s rainbow writing, word sorts, or writing silly sentences, choice boards provide a structured yet flexible way for students to engage with spelling at their own pace.
Roll and Cover
This engaging spelling activity is great for small groups or independent practice. Students roll the dice and find a picture that matches the sound they rolled. To differentiate, have students spell the entire word instead of just identifying the spelling pattern.

Word Sorts
Word sorts are a powerful, hands-on way to reinforce spelling patterns and help struggling spellers make meaningful connections between sounds and letter combinations. Unlike traditional memorization-based spelling activities, word sorts encourage students to analyze patterns, compare words, and develop a deeper understanding of how spelling works.
Because word sorts are structured yet flexible, they allow for easy differentiation—students can work independently, in partners, or in small groups, making them a great fit for any classroom. They also align with Science of Reading principles, helping students recognize common spelling rules while actively engaging with words.
