If you’ve ever had a student who freezes when it comes time to spell—even simple words—you’re not alone. Spelling is a complex skill that requires a strong understanding of sounds, patterns, and rules. Many students need extra support to develop that foundation, which is where a focused, effective spelling intervention can make all the difference.
Read on to learn how to identify spelling gaps, what effective intervention looks like, and which spelling activities and resources can help your students gain confidence and accuracy.
Why Spelling Deserves Its Own Intervention
While reading and spelling are connected, they aren’t always developed at the same pace. Some students can decode words they can’t yet spell and vice versa. Often students struggle with spelling as it requires deeper knowledge of phonics patterns, spelling rules, and word structure.
A solid spelling intervention focuses on more than memorizing word lists. It targets underlying gaps—like phonemic awareness, irregular patterns, or confusion with vowel teams and suffixes—and addresses them through practice that’s meaningful and structured.
Step One: Identify the Patterns
Before you can plan effective spelling activities, it helps to assess where your students are getting stuck. Are they forgetting the Magic E? Doubling consonants incorrectly? Mixing up when to use ck or k? Confusing short and long vowels? Struggling to spell diphthongs like oi, ou, or aw? Pinpointing these patterns helps you target your instruction and choose the right tools for support.
If you’re not sure how to target instruction, try using word sorts as a low-pressure way to observe which patterns students recognize and which ones need more attention. You can read more about how I use them in this post about word sorts in literacy centers.
Or for a fun-hands-on way to practice the same spelling rules use my phonics board games—perfect for small groups, centers, or early finishers who need continued exposure to key patterns. You can see how I use them in this post about phonics board games.
Make It Meaningful: Spelling Activity Sheets That Reinforce Rules
Once you know which concepts to address, it’s time to choose resources that reinforce those specific skills. I recommend using spelling activity sheets that focus on one rule at a time and follow a clear, structured format.
In this post about teaching phonics rules, I talk about how rules like the CK rule, the doubling consonant rule, and Gentle Cindy can be taught explicitly—and practiced repeatedly—using consistent formats.
To support these lessons, my phonics rule game boards include spelling-focused practice for each rule and are ideal for both intervention groups and literacy centers.
Practice Through Play: Spelling Games That Stick
Spelling doesn’t have to mean silent worksheets. In fact, one of the best ways to reinforce tricky patterns is through spelling games that give students repeated, low-stress exposure.
Games like Word Bump and Roll and Cover make spelling practice fun, especially when students are working in pairs or small groups. These games double as informal assessment tools, giving you insight into what’s sticking and what still needs work.
My phonics game board bundle includes a wide range of patterns and skills, making it easy to adapt your spelling intervention to individual student needs.

Keep It Consistent with Easy-to-Use Tools
Consistency is key in any intervention. That’s why I designed my spelling activity sheets, game boards, and word sorts to be used interchangeably throughout the week. Start with explicit teaching, follow up with hands-on practice, and revisit skills with review games.
If you’re looking for a way to structure your week, I recommend starting with a mini-lesson and sort on Monday, using practice sheets midweek, and wrapping up with a game on Friday. This approach keeps things fresh while reinforcing the same concept in different formats.
